Lesson Overview

Students will explore how solar panels work and their use in homes. Students will measure the voltage a 2v to 5v solar panel can produce from different lighting sources.

Target Grades: 6-8 / 9-12

Set Up Time: 10 minutes

Class Time: 45 minutes to 1 hour, longer with all optional and extension activities

Lesson Resources

Objectives

  1. Measure the voltage (and amperage for 9-12 students) from a 2v to 5v solar panel in different lighting conditions.
  2. Explain that solar panels convert radiant energy from the sun to electricity.
  3. Explain the benefits to using solar energy at home.

Guiding question: How can humans harness the power of the Sun?
