REAP staff, for the AK EnergySmart program, provide resources to educators such as trainings, activity supplies, lending kits, classroom visits, intensive unit planning, camp activities, guest speaker connections, and more. Learn about each below, and contact us with any questions or requests.
Trainings
Educator trainings can be in person or virtual and last from 30 minutes to a week. The trainings can be for educators or non educators (such as employees of an organization who occasionally do class visits during travel). Staff often provide 15-hour trainings spread over two or more days for teachers to earn a continuing education credit. These trainings include hands-on practice of lessons and tours of local energy projects. Contact us to learn about upcoming trainings or to schedule one at your organization, school, or district.
Classroom visits
Staff can visit all ages/grades (PreK through college) virtually or in person with engaging lessons. We can deliver any of the lessons in the AK EnergySmart curriculum, but the most common ones we do are:
- Thick Coats and Sleeping Bears, K-2
- Our Classroom Electric Footprint, 3-5
- Be an Energy Star, 6-8
- My Electric Use, 9-12
- Alaska Energy 101, Adult
Kits
Educators can request a kit of supplies to use for delivering AK EnergySmart lessons for formal and/or informal education. Kits include:
- USB drive with AKES curriculum
- Energy Saving Tips for Alaska booklet (PDF download)
- Renewable Energy Atlas of Alaska (PDF download)
- Two electricity monitors
- Digital thermometer/IR thermometer bundle
- One ice melting block kit
- Set of playing cards with energy efficiency & conservation tips
- Freezer/Refrigerator Thermometer

Email Colleen with your name, community/school, and how you would use the kit for education in Alaska.
Power Pledge Challenge
In the Power Pledge Challenge, students work to reduce their energy use at home and school throughout the school year by completing activities such as a classroom energy audit, creating an energy plan for the school, and engaging with various energy professionals. In partnership with 11 organizations and utilities around the state, REAP works with teachers to implement this project-based Challenge and award prizes to classrooms who earn the most points.
Learn moreGuest speakers
You can request a guest speaker for your class, community group, or event. REAP staff can develop unique presentations for the audience, and if you would like a connection with a professional in a specific field and/or location, we can partner with or recommend someone who fits your needs. Email Colleen with the date, audience, length of presentation, and requested topic.
